ROMAN HOLIDAY: A Vacation To Remember
I am all about unconventional love stories about as much as I am into really great acting—amazingly enough, this Oscar winning film has both of these elements and now I am depressed when I start thinking about the current state of “filmmaking”. The direction and cinematography of this film are beautiful and the landscape of Rome is really highlighted. Sadly, I am not so upset This is the story about a bratty princess that wants to get out of her civic duties and into life on the streets. Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) happens to be on a European tour to promote a European civil union and relations with her unnamed country. She throws a fit and decides to run away from the palace she’s staying at because she wants some real life experiences, only a doctor has given her a shot of something like valium and once she’s on the streets of Rome she starts passing out. While she’s going in and out of consciousness a journalist named Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck) finds her and decides to share a cab with her. When she tells him she’s staying at the Coliseum and then blacks out he is forced to take her home with him.
In the morning Bradley wakes up and realizes he is late for an interview with Princess Ann. He races to his editor’s office and lies about attending the press conference with the Princess. When his editor finally calls him on his lie
Bradley goes back to his apartment and calls his photographer buddy, Irving Radovich (Eddie Albert) to meet up with him and the Princess. Meanwhile, the Princess wakes up and says her name is Anya and that she has to get going. She leaves Bradley and takes money for a cab ride from him. While walking she buys some stuff and has her hair chopped into a fashionable bob. Bradley follows her and then accidentally on purpose bumps into her again while she’s eating ice cream. She says she has spent the day doing whatever she’s wanted and he asks her what else she wants to do and then he tells her they will do it.
Irving shows up at a café where Anya orders champagne and Bradley worries about money. After getting Irving to shut up about how much Anya looks like the princess and explains to him about the five thousand dollars and gets Irving in on the deal. Irving follows along and gets exclusive photographs of the princess having a regular life while enjoying her day with Bradley.
Back at the castle, the royal family has employed henchmen to come to Rome and help them find the Princess. While attending a dance the henchmen locate the Princess while she’s rendezvousing with Bradley and the Italian public. They gab at her and she yells for Bradley who starts punching anyone who gets near Anya. Finally, the two escape
The next day, Bradley’s editor approaches him about the story after hearing about that Bradley may have been hanging out with her. Bradley denies this and tells Irving he can sell his photos, but his love for the Princess will not allow him to sell out the princess. His editor flips out and tells the two they have to attend the Princess press conference the next day. The two cut to the front of the press crowd and the Ann notices them immediately. She answers questions and then chooses to meet some of the members of the press, which include Bradley and Irving. Irving hands her the photographs from their adventures and they all go their separate ways.
